“What the fuck just happened?” Colby asked as he grabbed hold of Kemma and looked around. They both felt nauseous and dizzy.

“Where are we?” she asked. She clenched Colby’s shirt as she looked over his shoulder. It looked like their apartment, kind of.

The apartment was sterile looking. Some of the walls had been torn out and replaced with floor-to-ceiling glass partitions. The portraits Brenna had drawn of the four men, which once hung on the walls, were gone and replaced by digital holograms of people they didn’t recognize. The rest of the apartment looked similar to what they were familiar with, but the entire place had a very strange and unwelcome feel.

“Kemma,” Colby said. The sound of his voice made her nervous.

She looked up at his face.

“Look.”

Kemma followed his stare toward the window and looked out at the city below. It was unrecognizable. There was no cityscape of building crowns. Instead, it was like looking through a forest thick with trees, but the trees were massive buildings instead of woods. As she went to the window and looked up, she couldn’t even see the tops of the buildings or the sky for that matter. It was impossible to tell whether it was night or day outside. The only illumination was the artificial light inside the apartment, and the buzzing light filtering out from the buildings outside. It felt like they were ants trapped in a maze ten times their size. It was claustrophobic.

“Where are we?” she asked him a second time.

Colby was looking around the apartment and had picked up a tablet that was sitting on the counter. He turned it around in his hand and held it up to face her.

“I don’t think the question is where are we; it’s when are we.”

Kemma looked confused as she walked toward him, but when she got close to the tablet, she gasped. The date on the device was several decades in the future.
